Application
Mesotrione is a broad-spectrum, systemic, selective herbicide primarily used for weed control in corn fields, but it is also applicable in various other areas such as rice paddies, sugarcane, and lawns. Here are the details of mesotrione’s application in different fields:
Corn Field Weed Control: Mesotrione inhibits the enzyme acetolactate synthase in plants, disrupting amino acid metabolism, which leads to whitening and death of the plants. It is mainly used for pre-emergent or post-emergent control of annual broadleaf weeds and some grass weeds in corn fields, such as burdock, trifoliate pigweed, hemp dogbane, lambsquarters, amaranth, and smartweed.
Sugarcane Field Weed Control: In sugarcane fields, mesotrione is used in combination with cyanazine and ametryn to effectively control grass weeds such as crabgrass, foxtail, and Bermuda grass, as well as broadleaf weeds like hemp dogbane and burdock. It also has some suppressive effects on perennial troublesome weeds such as cyperus.
Rice Field Weed Control: Mesotrione is also applied in rice paddies, where it is used in combination with pretilachlor to effectively control barnyard grass and some annual broadleaf weeds and sedges.
Lawn Maintenance: In lawn care, mesotrione is used to control other weeds in Kentucky bluegrass lawns, such as creeping jenny and lambsquarters.
