Methomyl is a systemic insecticide that effectively kills various pests’ eggs, larvae, and adults. It has both contact and stomach poison effects. Once inside the insect’s body, it inhibits acetylcholinesterase. This prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, which plays a crucial role in nerve transmission. As a result, the insect experiences uncontrolled nerve impulses, leading to convulsions, excessive excitement, paralysis, and tremors, ultimately causing death. Insects’ eggs usually do not survive past the black head stage after contact with the pesticide. Even if they hatch, they die quickly. Foliar treatment can control many pests. Methomyl is very effective against aphids, thrips, cutworms, cabbage looper moths, tobacco budworms, alfalfa weevils, tobacco hornworms, cotton leaf miners, apple codling moths, and cotton bollworms. It also shows good control effects on rice stem borers, planthoppers, and fruit tree pests.

Features of Methomyl

1. The insecticidal mechanism is unique. Methomyl acts by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase, which disrupts the reactivation of neurotransmitters within nerve fibers, leading to the poisoning and death of pests.

2. The ovicidal activity is extremely high. This is evident in three aspects: ① The pesticide solution can prevent the hatching of unhatched eggs or cause larvae to die before reaching the second instar; ② Eggs laid within three days after application cannot hatch or complete their early development; ③ Newly hatched larvae are effectively poisoned when they chew through the egg membrane.

3. The speed of insect control is rapid. The primary mode of action is through stomach toxicity, complemented by strong contact activity. Insects that come into contact with the Methomyl solution quickly experience poisoning and death.

4. The insecticidal spectrum is broad. Methomyl effectively controls various pests, including leaf miners, leaf roller caterpillars, leaf curl galls, aphids, pear psyllids, scale insects, and codling moths.

Application

1. Control of Cotton Pests

(1) Methomyl is primarily used to control cotton bollworms. During the peak egg-laying period, use 100-120 mL of 20% Methomyl emulsion per mu, mixed with 50-60 liters of water for spraying.

(2) If there are still many eggs and larvae after treatment, spray a second time after 5 days. After the eggs hatch, increase the dosage to about 180 mL.

(3) Among the existing agents for controlling cotton bollworms, Methomyl has good ovicidal properties and is often selected as a component in combination formulations for controlling these pests.

(4) For controlling cotton aphids, use 25-50 mL of 20% Methomyl emulsion per mu, mixed with water for spraying.

2. Control of Cabbage Pests

(1) Typically, use 80-120 mL of 20% Methomyl emulsion per mu, mixed with 40-60 liters of water for spraying. Do not harvest for 5 days after application.

(2) Methomyl is registered for use on cabbage only and should not be arbitrarily expanded to other vegetables.

3. Control of Tobacco Pests

(1) Use 120 mL of 20% Methomyl emulsion per mu, mixed with 40-60 liters of water for spraying. This can control aphids, tobacco caterpillars, and grasshoppers, among others.

(2) For controlling armyworms and tobacco budworms, use 160 mL of 24% water solution per mu, mixed with water for spraying. Do not harvest the treated tobacco leaves for 5 days.

4. Control of Fruit Tree Pests

(1) For controlling grape leaf rollers, apply a 400-600 fold dilution of 24% Methomyl water solution once before and once after flowering, with an interval of 10-14 days.

(2) For controlling apple codling moths, spray a 600-1200 fold dilution of 24% water solution.

(3) For controlling citrus leaf miners, spray a 1000 fold dilution of 24% water solution when the new shoots are about 2 cm long, then reapply in 4-6 days. This can also control citrus aphids.

5. Control of Silkworm and Tea Pests

(1) For controlling wild silkworms and silkworm borers, use a 4000-8000 fold dilution of 40% Methomyl emulsion (Cocoon Treasure) for spraying.

(2) For controlling tea twig leafhoppers and tea thrips, use a 600-800 fold dilution of 24% Methomyl water solution for spraying.

(3) For controlling black spotted whiteflies, use a 3000-4000 fold dilution of 90% Methomyl soluble powder for spraying.

6. Control of Soybean Pests

For pests like soybean armyworms, Mexican bean beetles, and top borer moths, use 80-160 mL of 24% Methomyl water solution per mu, mixed with 50 kg of water for spraying.
